How to Expand into Your Best Self

How to Expand into Your Best Self

“If you have the ability to dream it, you have the capacity to fulfill it”

-Jack Canfield

Your dreams are not there to taunt you, they were given uniquely to YOU so that you could fulfill them. When you feel discontent, it’s because you are ready to EXPAND. True happiness comes from allowing ourselves to grow. When we reach for new heights and accomplish our goals, we feel fulfilled. So follow your heart and go for it! The only person holding you back is yourself. This post will teach you how to get out of your own way by changing your thoughts to attract more of what you want into your life.

Intention is the secret ingredient in feng shui.  When you make adjustments with intention, you are setting a purpose for what you are doing.  The adjustments that you make to your environment will be more effective, and your desires will manifest more quickly.

How to Set Your Intention

Here are three suggestions on how to set your intention every time you feng shui a room. It is something you will want to do during the feng shui process, as well as after the room is completed.  It is also something that you should do during maintenance.  For example, after I applied feng shui to our bedroom, if I had cleaned out our closet or added a picture to the wall, I would set the intention for what I wanted.  The more intentional and purposeful you can make every change you make to your environment, the better the results will be!

Prayer

After making any external movement to your environment, you may bless the shift with a prayer from any religion that you identify with.  Remember, feng shui is not a religion.  It honors all beliefs, even non-believers so to speak. If you are Christian, you can say the Hail Mary or a prayer to Jesus. If you are Buddhist, you may say a prayer to Him.

Affirmation

  1. Affirmations are in the NOW:  Even if you don’t have exactly what you want right now, say what you want as if you already have it.  For example, if you are looking to accumulate more money so that you no longer have to be stressed out about paying off your bills, you would say, “I am grateful that I always have enough to pay my bills.”  Or “The universe supports me financially in everything that I do.”
  2. Affirm with gratitude or a positive emotion: When you say what you want, say it with a grateful heart. In addition, always say what it is that you are wanting to attract.  Avoid using any negative words such as “no” or “do not.” For example, if you are hoping to heal your relationship with your partner or another family member you could say, “I am thankful for our lifelong friendship and joyous relationship.”  Or, “I find great joy in talking with my partner about my feelings.  We listen to each other and feel deep fulfillment in our relationship.”
  3. Imagine the affirmation is true.  What does it feel like?  As you say the affirmation, imagine how you would feel if this really became true?  How does your body feel knowing that all is well?  How does your head and heart feel now that this area of your life is healed?  Say it.  Mean it.  Feel it. Dr. Laura Berman has elaborate research on the study of quantum physics and how this particular step, “feeling as if,” is so vital to the process of attracting what you want into your life.  Our body’s cells respond at the molecular level when we visualize what we want and act as if.  The Universe matches our vibrational frequencies and delivers exactly what it is that we are giving out.

Praying and Affirmation Combination

Gratitude attracts more abundance. Try praying in using a positive affirmation. Act as if God has already blessed you with your desires and it is on its way.   An example of this would be something like, “Dear God, I am so grateful for the abundance of money and friendships that you are sending my way (right now).”  Remember, The Universe, or God, says “yes” to all of your hearts desires, as long as it is for the greater good.  He wants you to be happy and experience all of the blessings the world has to offer you.

affirmation-bagua

There are official mudras or affirmations that have been passed down from our ancestors to feng shui practitioners.  These mudras are sacred and are only to be passed from teacher to student or from consultant to client. These are powerful tools that are available to you if you decide that you want to take your feng shui journey a step further.  However, your personal prayers and affirmations are still very powerful and important, and you WILL experience accelerated results by setting your intention in your own unique way.

I hope you have found this post helpful. My book which is anticipated this Spring will also feature ways to set intentions for your classroom, as well as how to teach students to think positive and believe in themselves.

How to Attract What You Want with Your Home Decor

I just couldn’t take it any more!  My feng shui journey with with elements started at my South Loop apartment in Chicago. It all began with the bland, white wall in which my husband and I stared at as we watched TV.  The wall was over 20 feet high, and I just could not seem to get the “right” pictures or wall decor to fit the space.  It felt very cold and plain.

I had heard of feng shui before, so I decided to look into it before I selected a paint color for the walls.  As I conducted some “Google research”, I learned that our living room was in the wealth area of our apartment and it would be activated by the wood elements.  In addition, water represents money and nourishes the wood element.

This was my first experience with applying feng shui to a room, and I have not looked back since!  After applying the elements, the room simply came together!  I felt like I became the star of my very own home makeover show, and all I wanted to do was continue to apply feng shui to other areas of our apartment so that it felt more welcoming.  Each time I applied the appropriate elements to the specific gua, or area, of the home, I felt more and more at peace in my space.  Life at home was much more tranquil, and I even started to feel more energy at work.

So, did the elemental application to the wealth area work?  You bet it did!  My husband got a new job offer less than a year later. It was a significant raise and it gave us the opportunity to expand into the next chapter of our lives which included starting a family and moving into our first house!

I have since become a certified feng shui consultant, and now I am here to share how you too can transform your life with the decor you choose. You can remove the stumbling blocks of your life by consciously decorating your home, office, or classroom. There are three steps you can try today to apply elemental cures to your space and get the results you desire right now!

Three Steps to Improving Your Home with the Elements

You’ve cleared out your space and made room for the new.  Now, it is time to really activate the energy of the space.  Remember, there are nine areas of your life in which you can focus on.  For the next exercise, I would highly recommend starting with one gua, or area, to get you started.  Of course we all would like to focus on all nine areas, and ultimately that is the goal of feng shui, for all nine spaces to work in harmony. However, it is best to focus on on one room at a time.

Step One:  Lay the bagua map (See image below) on the floor plan of your home.  The bottom of the map should be in line with the front door, so you would be entering into Knowledge, Career, or Helpful people sections.

screen-shot-2016-10-06-at-9-16-51-pm

Step Two: Identify the area you want to work on (one space at a time is recommended).  De-clutter and spend time in that space. After that, you can get started making adjustments and decorating according to the elements!  Use the shape, color, or actual element associated with that gua in order to activate the space and improve that area of your home and life!

Decor Suggestions to Represent Each Element:

  1. Earth:  Square or rectangular (horizontal) picture frames, yellow throw blanket or accent pillows, sand colored towels, sand or rocks in a square dish, a salt lamp, fresh flowers or fake flowers that look real
  2. Water: picture of the ocean, fish tank, water fountain, thunderstorm or ocean sounds, mirrors, purple drapes
  3. Fire: candles, fireplace, picture with reds or bright orange, Christmas Tree, triangular patterns, knives, weapons, fur, leather, feathers
  4. Wood: Rectangular frames (vertical), wooden sculptures or dishes, wood furniture, bamboo plant, money tree, bonsai tree
  5. Metal: Metal dishes, circular frames or clocks, metallic artwork, gray or white throw pillows or curtains

Step Three: Make changes with the intention in mind of what you want to create for yourself.  Seal this intention with a silent prayer or a mantra.  This is covered in greater detail in my next post!

There are endless possibilities when it comes to decorating with feng shui, and that is what makes it so much fun.  You will be shocked at how simple it is. It’s easy to over-think it and wonder if you are doing it right, but there is no need to worry.  Just give it a try and as you start to feel the difference, you will become more and more confident in making adjustments throughout your home.

With greatest sincerity, I want to thank you for taking the time to browse this post.  I have found feng shui to be uplifting and completely life changing, and I hope you can too. I am currently working on a book called “Teaching from the Heart with Feng Shui.” Not only does it cover the basics of feng shui, but it also gives suggestions on how to apply these principles to your classroom or office so that you can feel the ultimate flow from your personal to your professional life. If you are interested in how to apply the elements in your work space, please let me know.  I would love to answer any questions you may have, and I also appreciate any feedback since some of these posts will be published some day!

Three Steps to Feng Shui Your Classroom

PicCollage.png

Hey teachers, this one is for you! I wanted to post three ideas to bring the tranquility of your summer break back with you into your classroom. Since this is my very first post about how to feng shui your classroom, I would like to start with a disclaimer about what feng shui is NOT.  This has helped put my mind at ease when applying feng shui principles to enhance the classroom atmosphere:

Feng shui is not a religion, nor does it preach any religious tenet.  It predates Taoism, Confucianism, and even Buddhism.  The first Amendment Center, which works to preserve and protect First Amendment freedoms through information and education, has approved the organizational tips embodied by feng shui.  Feng shui does not infringe upon anyone’s freedom of religion.  (Heiss, 2004)

I found this point extremely important to mention so that you and I both can be at peace knowing that any and all of the feng shui tips provided are always in the best interest of our students’ well-being, and it is not a religion, so you will not be impeding on anyone’s beliefs.

“Research supports feng shui.  If the environment is balanced students will learn easier.” (Heiss, 2004)

So, what IS feng shui?  According to Feng Shui for the Classroom 101 Easy-to-Use ideas,Feng shui teaches a method of organization and appreciation for harmony.  It helps people to become balanced in their environment and within themselves.” Since we are just getting started, allow me to share three easy ways to incorporate feng shui into your classroom next year!

#1 Bring in fresh energy with plants

Your classroom will probably be fresh and ready to go on the first day of school.  However, as the year progresses the air can get stale.  Bamboo survives very well in low light, but if you have another plant preference that would work too.  Adding plants will bring in fresh oxygen and keep you and your students feeling fresh all year.  I love giving students who need a little extra attention the job of watering the plant.  It gets them moving with purpose and gives them a sense of responsibility.

#2 Add Yin energy with music, low lighting, and aromatherapy

Our classrooms already have a lot of yang, or active energy, by nature. The bright florescent lights, electronics, and the energy of many children in a contained space all contribute to the yang energy.  So, it is important to balance the environment by adding softer energy to the space.  If you do this, you will find the students will concentrate better and be more receptive during instruction.  Here are ways to add yin energy:

  • Play classical or other relaxing music as students work
  • Turn off the lights during instruction time on the SMART board, and turn them back on when it is time for the students to work.
  • Use lavender Sage Spray or other relaxing aromas to clear the energy of the room and give a more peaceful atmosphere.

#3 Try feng shui in your own home.

It has been my experience that using feng shui at my home has really helped me find more balance in my life.  A happier, more centered teacher makes for happier students!  I promise you if you start applying feng shui to your home, even just your bedroom, you will see a transfer from your personal to your professional life.

Well, that’s it for now my teacher friends!  I will be posting more tips throughout the summer on Twitter at #fengshuiclassroom.  As always, I welcome you to “like” my Facebook Page or  find me at www.KristinaHollinger.com.

How Feng Shui Found Me: Would You Keep Reading On? I Want to Know!

13639527_755885588076_1437985470_o

There I was, newly married and living in the city. I had a new teaching job and a new workout regimen that kept me busy. My husband and I had finally emerged from the credit card debt that accumulated from planning a downtown wedding.  So I guess things were starting to look up. Maybe it was the post-wedding blues (supposedly that’s “a thing”), but I still felt like something was missing and longed for something more.  From the outside things seemed to be going pretty good, so what was wrong?

As I looked around our Chicago South Loop apartment, I had an uneasy feeling.  The walls were all stark white and hadn’t been painted since we moved in three years ago.  In my spare time, I decided I would start to spruce up the place, make it a little more welcoming and comfortable. That’s when I discovered feng shui.

To my surprise, the months following my feng shui enhancements were a total whirlwind, in a good way! My husband and I found out we were expecting our first baby, and he had gotten an exciting advancement in his career.  Things started to look up, and I started to feel less uneasy and more fulfilled in my day-to-day life.  More importantly, that new-calm was transferred to my second home, which was my classroom.  When you create a flow of consistency between your personal and professional life, you can breath easier. Life just feels lighter!
This knowledge was all too good to keep to myself, so I decided to earn a Feng Shui Consultant Certification through the Feng Shui School of Chicago with Laurie Pawlie.  I became a Red Ribbon Professional Member of the International Feng Shui Guild in 2016. Although I knew I wanted to help others heal their lives with feng shui, in my heart I wanted to do something more.  So, I started a book… Here is a preview.  I want to know, would you keep reading?

Why feng shui?

Why do I suggest feng shui? Feng shui is a tangible way that you can minimize your problems or frustrations.  When something in your life feels uneasy, you can address it head-on in a physical way instead of stewing over it in your mind.  Feng shui allows you to visually see your environment change, and it gives you hope for your future.  I’ve seen it work in my own life and in my clients’ lives.

“Exterior movement creates interior shifts.”  Once you start removing the layers of unnecessary objects or things that no longer make you feel good, you start to feel better instantly. You start to remove blocks and see things more clearly.

Although there are not necessarily three steps to feng shui a room, I have broken it down for you.  I am a “list person,” and I love to check the boxes as I complete tasks.  So, for my fellow list people, these three feng shui steps are for you: declutter, enhance the using the elements, and seal it with intention.

How do you feng shui?

Here is a brief overview of how feng shui works. Feng shui literally is translated as wind and water. The “wind” is the invisible force of energy that you are always feeling.  Every space you enter has a different vibe. Think of a place where you have felt the most relaxed. Perhaps you were on the beach listening to the waves crash against to coast, or you have been to a spa where you smell the aroma of the massage oils and lotions. We can create positive feelings with an invisible force. By shifting our inner thoughts and our intention, we can manifest the life we desire.

The “water” represents the physical aspect of feng shui.  We can see water, just as you can see how a room appears.  The way the room is arranged will create the feeling too.  This is the tangible aspect of feng shui that really makes it easy for practical realists to see major life changes.  This is the outer aspect of feng shui which focuses on how you place the furniture and what types of colors, patterns, and other decor work well in a particular space. The idea is that you can create the feelings you desire simply by adjusting your environment.

Professor Lin Yun’s definition of feng shui is as follows:

Feng Shui is the method that people naturally use to choose and locate, build and construct, or adapt and change their working and living environments for maximum health, wealth, and well-being according to the knowledge then available.”

When I heard Professor’s definition I was relieved! Considering before I earned my certification I had been a “Master of the ‘feng shui’ Google search.” The more I learned about feng shui from professional instructors, the more I realized that I had some misunderstandings about it.  As you learn about feng shui, you may do some things that are not necessarily accurate, but that is OK!  According to this definition, you are going to do the best you can with the knowledge you have.  As you learn more about the topic, you will be able to make adjustments that serve you better and better as time goes on.

What you need to know to get started!

What you really need to know to get started is that you have the power to change nine areas of your life with the help of feng shui. Using a tool called the bagua map, you will be able to see which area of your home, office, or classroom connects to specific areas of your life.  The nine areas are: wealth, reputation, relationships, children & creativity, health, family, knowledge, career, and helpful people & travel. Ideally, a feng shui home will have good flowing energy in all nine areas, but it takes time. I would recommed focusing on one gua at a time.

Just as life is ever-changing, so must your feng shui practice continue to evolve.  Once you declutter a space and decorate, you will need to check in on that area of your home from time to time to keep it healthy.  The knowledge of feng shui is a very powerful tool that you can use as situations arise in your life.  Using the bagua map, you can address any area of life and see results almost immediately!

So, let’s stop there… would you keep reading?  I am happy to give you more details on the three steps to start feng shui on your own!  I have a free two-page guide that makes it super simple.  You can find me on Facebook or at KristinaHollinger.com  Or check out the video below that outlines the three steps! Thank you for allowing me to join you on the start of your feng shui journey!

Until next time,

How to Feng Shui Your Closet

When I get ready for any occasion, I always think about the kind of vibe I want to give off or how I want to feel.  According to feng shui, all colors radiate different vibrations and enhance different emotions.  Here is a quick look at what the colors represent so that you are ready to move forward confidently at your next job interview or date.  Knowing what color is best to wear will simply help elevate your energy, and who doesn’t want that, right?

Let’s talk about red! It is the most energetic color in the feng shui. Red is a great color to wear at a job interview or to an important meeting.  Red says, “I know what I’m doing.  I am confident, and you should take me seriously.” Red is a fire color, so it represents passion.  You could wear red if you are looking to attract more passion in your relationship, or to “spark things up” in your career.

Yellow represents the Earth element and good health. Yellow is a great color to wear to enhance your immune system.  It also goes without saying that yellow is a cheerful color and it can uplift your emotional wellness too. In general, yellow is associated with friendship, so yellow is best for a girls night out, versus your first date.

Green represents the wood element, and it is also associated with the heart chakra. Overall, green is such a fantastic color to wear any time! Green represents abundance and money.  It represents the family, growth, and stability.  When you think of lush green trees and plants, you are reminded of Spring and new life.  Wearing green will promote growth, abundance, and expansion.

In feng shui, blue is the color of knowledge. Blue is a fantastic color to wear when you are taking a class or going to school. You will soak up more knowledge wearing blue.  In addition, blue is associated with the throat chakra, which affects communication. It is a wise choice to wear when you are writing a book or essay. (In fact, I should run and change right now as I write this blog…!) Another great quality about blue is that it represents water and money!  Let the abundance flow and wear some blue today!

Purple is associated with royalty. In ancient Egypt, for example, only the wealthy class could afford the purple dye for their clothing (that’s the 6th grade teacher in me explaining this one…). It goes without saying that if you wear purple you are going to attract more wealth into your life and you will look classy. I am a libra and purple is the libra’s “power color.”  You might want to look up your sign and find out yours too!

In feng shui, black represents the water element. Black activates the career gua!  You would be wise to wear black (and red) to a job interview.  I also like to wear black on days when I have big meetings or when I am being observed (fellow teachers know what I am talking about).  Wearing black is a great way to activate your career and give it a boost!

Finally we have       .  Oh, you couldn’t see the font? White!  White is the color of purity, and it also represents the chakra at the top of the head, your connection to heaven.  You may want to wear a white blouse if you want to feel closer to your Higher Self and connected with Devine intuition.

I really hope you had fun reading today’s post!  As always, I would love to hear if you have any questions or personal feng shui experiences to share! I invite you to join me at my Facebook Page for a daily dose of positivity on your newsfeed!

Until next time,

How to Tap into the Unlimited Flow of Abundance with One Feng Shui Principle

0a864212-3f95-4137-b547-69b5ed61e819

Did you know that abundance is as vast as the ocean?  Imagine walking up to the sea with a bucket.  You could not possibly scoop up the entire ocean simply by using your bucket!  The ocean represents all the abundance that the universe has to offer you.  You could not possibly get “it all,” and yet the ocean represents how unlimited the resources and opportunities of the universe are to you.  Unfortunately, we live in a world where so many people see that things are lacking. Not enough time.  Not enough money.  Never enough.  You can shift this energy with ONE simple feng shui cure!

Once you try this one feng shui principle, you will see immediate results.  You will start to notice abundance flowing to you like a waterfall.  I want you to think of something that you really want.  Notice how you feel about asking for this.  Do you feel deserving?  Does your inner voice tell you “I couldn’t…”  or “It’s too much…”?  These responses are normal if you are thinking in your ego.  Let’s allow ourselves to think BIGGER for ourselves.  The more you have in your life, the more you are able to give back and help others.  So allow yourself to ask for the money, time, and other resources that you need.  It’s nothing to feel guilty about.

“The more you have…the more you are able to give back…”

So why does it seem like we can’t always get what we want? The right relationship or the dream home?  The truth is that you can, but you need to take baby steps to get there.  One of our major stumbling blocks is that we don’t feel deserving of everything.  Who are we to “have it all?”  We think if we ask for “too much,” it will take away from someone else.  You need to know that any abundance you attract will not take away from anyone else because there are infinite possibilities for us all. Back to the ocean analogy.  You could not possibly scoop up the entire ocean with your little bucket.  The point?  No request is too great for God! Ask for anything your heart calls for.

“Any abundance you attract will not take away from anyone else because there are infinite possibilities for us all.”

So, what is the feng shui cure that will help you attract abundance? Practice gratitude.  It is like a magnet.  Wayne Dyer said, “What you think expands. Monitor your inner dialogue, and match your thoughts to what you want and what you intend to create.” Like attracts like.  The more gratitude you have the more you will have to be grateful for.

“What you think expands…. Match your thoughts to what you want.”

As you go through your day, think of 9 things that you are grateful for.  Then, tonight, write all nine things down. It is so important that you write them down.  It solidifies all that you are grateful for, and it is a message to the universe that you appreciate all that you have been blessed with, and I assure you more will come flowing in.

Let us remember that the universe WANTS to provide us with all of our desires, granted they serve a higher good. We are born to fulfill our dharma and succeed.  Let’s allow our dreams to become reality with this one simple practice.

How can numbers guide you?

namaste

What is your favorite number? Look out for repeated numbers like 111 or 888. These are signs meant just for you. In feng shui, each number has a different meaning. I look for signs all the time on license plates and other random sources throught the day. Numbers are everywhere, and they can encourage and guide you throughout your day.

The numbers 1-9 are listed below.  The representations listed are a combination of number meanings in feng shui, as well as from the “Angel Numbers 101” app and book by Doreen Virtue.
Here is a quick look at what these numbers could be trying to tell you:
1- New beginning. Its’a great time to start a new project or endeavor. The 11:11 or other repeats of this number are signs that your thoughts are materializing rapidly so keep focused on what you want, not what you don’t want. Your wishes are coming true!
2- Partnership and Relationship. You are learning to compramise. Everything is working out exactly as it is supposed to.
3- This represents balance (mind, body and soul). It can also represent Jesus or other ascended masters who are with you. Finally, 5 is the number of the family gua.  It represents financial security and that all of your bills will be paid and taken care of.
4- This number represents wealth in feng shui. Repeated 4’s can also be a sign that the angels are with you.
5- A “balanced” number in feng shui. When looking at numbers 1-9, 5 is right in the middle. This number can also represent change. A number such as “555” could be a sure sign that many positive changes are coming your way, so welcome them with open arms. It is also a sign of “out with the old and in with the new.”
6- Represents helfpul people. It is also a sign to give all material worries to God and your angels. Remember that our thoughts materialize, so keep them positive and focused on what you want.
7- 7 is a spiritual number. If you see a “7” know that you are on the right path and you are connected to your higher power. You have the “midas touch” and everything is working out in your favor. Think of the slot machines. “777” is always a win!
8- This is the sign of infinite abundance. 8 connects heaven and Earth. If you see this, know that your prayers about money have been heard and you are being taken care of.
9- This is most powerful number in feng shui. It represents energy and the completion of long term projects and goals. You are ready for the next phase of your career. Even if you don’t feel prepared, have confidence knowing that you have learned all of the prerequisites and all of your experiences have led you exactly where you need to be in this moment.
I hope you found this helpful, and I would be happy answer an questions. Enjoy finding numbers everywhere and let them lead you to your fullest potential and destiny!

50 Shades of Red: How to use red wisely in feng shui

dsc03804-500x500

Red is a very vibrant and powerful color.  It can be used in your home to increase passion, gain more recognition for accomplishments, or create more motivation. However, if used too much, it can cause aggression and stress.  Red represents the fire element.  Along with candles and the shape of the triangle, fire can be represented by all shades of red, orange, yellow, and pink. I recently bought a new red accent rug for our living room, and it just did NOT feel right.  Knowing how powerful the color is, I did some more research on red to get a better understanding on how to use it.  Here are three quick tips when considering red decor: the dos, the don’ts, and the exceptions!

DO:

  1. Red represents the fire element, so it is best in the fame and reputation area of your home (directly to the back and center when you enter your front door).  Fame and reputation is all about how the world views you.  If you don’t have any red or fire energy in this area, you might be feeling like your hard work keeps going unnoticed.  Perhaps you are feeling left out– did your invitation get lost in the mail? An easy way to fix this situation would be to add red in the fame and reputation area. The night before a job interview, light a candle in this area.  You want your future employer to see you in your best light, and this will help. It’s really hard to overdo the red in this area, so have fun with it!
  2. Is your relationship lacking passion and intimacy? Have you been feeling indecisive?  Are you feeling tired and lack of energy? All of this could be helped by adding a little red to the following three guas: the relationship area (to the back and right when you enter your front door) and the wisdom and knowledge area (to the left and front when you enter your front door), and the health area (the center of your home). These guas are all ruled by the earth element.  Since fire burns wood and creates earth, the fire element helps the relationship, wisdom, and health guas!  I would not recommend painting the walls red, but accent of red or other “fire colors” suggested above, would work great here.
  3. Did you know that the master bedroom, kitchen, and bathrooms are the most important rooms to feng shui?  A little red can be helpful in your master bedroom. Some red accent pillows or artwork will add passion into your life.  In addition, adding shades of red in the bathroom is a GREAT idea!  No matter which area your bathroom is, it is always a draining water energy.  Adding red helps slow down the water energy and keeps you feeling more stable.

Don’t: I will keep this one shot and sweet.  With all the benefits of red, you want to avoid too much red in any of the other guas such as wealth, career and helpful people.  For example, the wealth area is represented by wood.  If you put fire in the wealth area it will “burn up” your finances.  In addition, the career area is represented by water.  Too much fire energy will weaken your career.

Exceptions: Feng shui is all about intention!  If the red pillow, rug, or picture FEELS right to you, then go ahead and keep it.  However, if something feels off in that area, try removing the red.  You would be surprised how quickly the energy shifts.  In addition, if you want to “activate” your wealth and finances that you could add a little red to your wealth area or light a candle.  If there is no fire energy in the room, then that area of life may be feeling dull or low energy.  A little red can always give it a boost!

So, what happened with that rug I bought on clearance at Home Goods?  I originally put it in my living room, which is the helpful people/travel area.  It felt way too heavy. So, I moved the rug into the dining room.  The dining room is located in the relationship area of our house, and coincidentally it just felt so much better there!  The red energy of the rug nourishes the earth element, so it work well and just feels right.  In addition, the dining room table represents wealth.  Therefore, adding red to that area will hopefully activate our wealth! For now, I feel good about the new rug, but I am always moving things around.  Just as our lives are different everyday, so is the energy in our homes.  Feng shui is an ongoing journey that supports us through all of life’s peaks and valleys.

I hope you found this post helpful in your next decorating endeavor!

How to “Let Go” and Manifest Your Dreams: A 2 Part New Moon Exercise

moon

The new moon is a time to reflect inward and plant the seeds for that which you want to grow in your life, such as a new business or relationships. Recently I have struggled to find balance between actively manifesting my dreams and “letting go,” trusting that the universe is genius and everything is working out for my greatest good.  Since it’s the new moon, it got me thinking about the balance between yin and yang, which is essential if you want to feel peaceful and harmonious.  The new moon represents yin energy, whereas the full moon is yang. In feng shui, and life in general, we are constantly going back and forth between action and rest, trying to find the happy balance between the two.  This post is intended to give you inspiration to manifest your greatest desires and keep your energy (and sanity) at the same time.  In order to fulfill your dreams, you must first manifest and then surrender control.

Part One: Manifest

So, I know that when many people think of feng shui, they think of the physical placement of objects.  However, there is an internal aspect of feng shui that is just as powerful, if not more.  You see, feng shui will only really work when you set an intention behind the object placement.  Your thoughts and intentions are powerful.  When we think about what we really want, we are “manifesting” and attracting that which we desire.  This is considered a “yang” or active energy.

The truth is, we all have the ability to create the life we desire with the words we choose to think and speak and the energy we create. When we visualize and feel the joy that our fulfilled dreams give us, we ultimately tap into the universal flow of life which is always saying “yes!” to everything we are asking for. God, the universe, whatever you want to call it, wants us to be happy and fulfilled.  We are given dreams and desires that are unique to us because we are meant to follow our hearts and fulfill a dharma, or destiny, that only we can fulfill.

We can use positive affirmations to attract what we want in life. You can say these to yourself repeatedly and/or write them down and place them somewhere safe. Now, there are some “rules” when it comes to saying an affirmation.  Here is what I have come to learn:

  1. Make affirmations in the present tense: If you want a new house you would say, “I am grateful for my new, beautiful home that is big enough to entrain and grow into and that I can easily afford.”  This affirms that you have what you want already.  If you said something like, “I can’t wait to have the perfect home…” it places what you want in the future, and there it will remain.
  2. Use gratitude: When you say affirmations, say them with a grateful and joyful heart.  Trust that you are being heard and BELIEVE that it IS already set in motion.
  3. Visualize and feel like it is real: Athletes, CEOs and many other successful people have used visualization techniques to achieve their goals and fulfill their dreams.  When you set your intention, imagine it as if it already has happened.  Using the example of a new home, visualize walking into your front door.  Feel the joy as you see your friends and family gathering in your new home.  Then, as you go about your day, act as if it’s already on its way.

Part Two: Surrender

While the action of saying or writing affirmations is “yang” energy,  letting go is “yin” energy, and it is just as important.  This is the part where I tend to struggle. Many times we want to control the outcome.  If we affirmed that we would get a new house, the how is not up to us.  If we are too specific and affirm that we will get the house on 35 Cherry Tree Lane, we might miss other opportunities that would have been better suited for us in the long run.  We only have the ability to see what is happening in our life right now, but remember that Devine source has the power to see all aspects of our lives and into our future.  God, or the universe, knows what is ultimately best for us.  So, once we do the affirming, we need to let go and TRUST that the BEST possible outcome is coming our way.  Although I have not perfected the ability to let go of control, here are some tips that have helped me:

  1. Say “thank you” for so-called disappointments and failures: When something does not work out exactly how we had hoped–we lose a bid on a new house or don’t get a job we wanted– try being grateful.  Mayo Angelou once said that if someone leaves you or if something does not work out say,”Thank you.  Something better is waiting for me.”  Try thinking of something that worked out for you in your life. I bet if you really think about it, you could see how some of the seeming disappointments you experienced beforehand actually led you to that ideal and perfect new situation or outcome.  Even though we think we know exactly what we want, sometimes there is something better planned for us.
  2. Quiet your mind and be present: If you can find a guided meditation or take a few minutes to concentrate on your breathe, it will bring you into the present moment. Sometimes we forget to do the simplest thing, and that is to just take some deep breathes.  Try it right now.  Take three deep breathes: Fill up your lungs and belly as you inhale through your nose, and concentrate as you exhale through your mouth… How do you feel?  Surrendering to the present moment and realizing that all is well right now in this exact moment, helps us to connect with the positive universal flow of abundance.  When we are present, not worried about the future or regretting the past, we are more open to all the abundance that the present moment has to offer. If we live fully present in each moment, we can trust and know that each choice we make in the present moment will lead us one step closer to that which we desire.
  3. Say “thank you”- Funny enough, an attitude of gratitude fits into the yin & yang section, so I suppose it is the connecting link.  In gratitude you will find balance and inner peace.  There are SO many things to be grateful for.  Even if you are having the worst day, try being thankful for the simple things we usually take for granted: clean water, a warm shower, electricity, a cup of coffee, someone who gave you a smile…  The more you are grateful, the happier you will feel.

I recently saw a quote that pretty much sums everything up.  “The happiest people don’t have the best of everything, but they make the best of everything they have.” It’s completely natural and healthy to want to better your life: excel in your career, improve your home, find the perfect mate, or fulfill a lifelong dream.  So please, go ahead and attract the best into your life by affirming it is already so!  But don’t burn yourself out or beat yourself up when it doesn’t happen exactly as you planned. Remember to be grateful for what you already have today.  Life is full of abundance and opportunities, and you have EVERYTHING you need right now.

Until next time, namaste!
